Introducing 100% camel yarn by June Cashmere
Meet our new camel yarn
Properties of camel yarn
Softness
Camel down is smooth and soft, comparable to cashmere. In fact, when we soft-launched this new yarn at the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival, we did a blind touch test with booth attendees to see if they could distinguish a camel knit sample from a cashmere one.
While most identified the cashmere as softer, not everyone did. . . and all took away the point of the exercise: that camel is extremely soft. Like cashmere, the outer layer of camel down fibers has a low-scale structure making it feel smooth next to the skin.
Lightweightness
Camel down fiber is hollow, making it lightweight and warm. The fiber is breathable, wicks away moisture, and regulates body temperature, keeping you from getting overly warm.
As a lightweight fiber, our new 6-ply camel will create warm yet luxurious non-bulky cardigans and sweaters without the heaviness that comes from other wool fibers.
Drape and stitch definition
The yarn creates beautiful, even stitches, lovely drape, and strong stitch definition - as you can see in the photo of my cabled knit swatch above, done on US 6/4mm needles in color Olive Bark.
The yarn also produces a lovely surface halo, as seen on this stockinette swatch in the undyed, unbleached camel color, also done on US 6/4mm needles. Test knitting swatches of this new yarn has been a joy. The yarn is soft with a pleasant amount of give, so it is easy on my hands.
Colors
We offer our new 6-ply DK camel yarn in 5 colors. Initially, I wasn't sure about dyeing until our dyer assured me that camel takes dyes beautifully. He was right!
From right to left in the photo, we offer our DK in undyed, unbleached natural, the caramel colored neutral blend that comes off the camels. We dye our colors on top of the natural, just like we do with our cashmere colors, to yield a rich depth of color for all of our hues.
The colors we chose to launch this yarn include: Red Geranium (a deep, rich slightly apple red), Stormy Blue (a grey-blue color), Olive Bark (an olive-brown color), and Smoky Lilac (an earthy pale purple). We wanted this palette to be different from our cashmere colors and we love the result.
Durability and care
Camel fiber is strong and wears well, making it another yarn to add to our inventory of yarns to make garments that last. After knitting with our camel yarn, hand wash your finished product in cool water and mild soap. Rinse in cool water, then gently press out excess water and lay flat to dry.
